The main galaxy in this distant group underwent a major collision about 360 million years ago. This resulted in a 100,000 ly long, tidal tail, which is seen here in a series of faint, blue clumps laterally extending outward from the galaxy in a somewhat dish shaped curve. Along the tidal tail new dwarf galaxies formed. To the right of NGC5291 we see an unusually shaped galaxy, MCG-0533-005, interacting with it. It has been dubbed the “Seashell Galaxy”.
