Also known as ARP 222 this beautiful spiral lies 76 million ly away in Aquarius. The stellar streams and plumes extend outward at a great distance from the main galaxy. They are believed to be associated with a merger of 2 disk galaxies about 1 billion years ago. There is apparently not an abundance of hydrogen in the merged galaxy we see to form new stars, so the next stage could move directly into an elliptical.
