This fascinating planetary lies bout 2,000 ly away in Vela. It is sometimes referred to as the Southern Ring Nebula or Eight Burst Nebula.
The bright central star is not the one causing the nebula outburst. Astronomers have concluded that this is a multiple star system with 4-5 stars in it. One of these, buried in the nebulosity, is the dying source of the discharge.
