GUM 16- Chile

GUM 16 – Chile

This is an image of the central region of GUM 16. Gum was an Australian astronomer working out of Canberra. He composed a list of very wide field images. One of these – Gum 16 – covers about 8 degrees in Vela.

This is a very colorful area with what appears to a sort of rift in the heart of the large nebulous area. The dark central region is peppered with a field of distant stars. Note the encroaching filaments of the Vela supernova along the edges of the central region.
