NGC1199 is the large elliptical anchoring the “Hickson Compact Group” of galaxies shown here.
It lies about 107 million lys away in Eridanus.
This group is an example of a cluster of galaxies that include some that are interacting with each other, and others that are only photographic participants in the grouping. The 2 galaxies on the left are physically distant from the group.
Note the interesting spiral at the top – N1190. It displays a bright bar in its center surrounded by a very expansive spiral region.
